(PDF, 83kB) SAFETY AROUND WASTEWATER (SEWAGE) DECEMBER 11TH, 2019 Due to the recent sewage spill, at this time, please treat all standing water as wastewater. Wastewater may be contaminated with bacteria, viruses, and/or parasites. Potential health hazards could arise from contact with wastewater. The County (DOH-Broward County) recommends the following precautions regarding wastewater. • Be sure to keep all children and pets away from any area effected by the wastewater spill • Basic hygiene is critical. Wash your hands with soap and warm water, especially before preparing or eating food, after toilet use, after changing a soiled diaper, after participating in cleanup activities, and after handling articles contaminated with wastewater. • Avoid eating or drinking anything that has been contaminated with wastewater. • Do not wade through wastewater. - If you do come in contact with any wastewater, leaving shoes outside the home (to reduce the risk of indoor contamination), wash your body, and put on clean clothes.- If you do come in contact with any wastewater, leaving shoes outside the home (to reduce the risk of indoor contamination), wash your body, and put on clean clothes. • Avoid contact with wastewater, especially if you have open cuts or sores. - If you have open cuts or sores and you come into contact with wastewater, wash the area well with soap to prevent infection. If redness, swelling, or drainage develops, seek immediate medical attention. As a consequence to the sewage spill, high bacteria levels are expected in the waterway. Keep out of the water. Avoid swimming, fishing, or other recreational activities in the waterway. For health concerns, please contact your healthcare provider.
